We live in a connected world and I’m reliably informed the previously conceived six degrees of separation may soon be 5. So what? Well, give grown-ups a tutorial in ‘social networking’ (http://press.linkedin.com/about), a point and click interface and an opportunity to meander, chat and network though 3 degrees of their business peers and they may be bound for business success.

Linkedin is one of the worlds premiere business focused online social networks, and unlike some of its childhood compatriots, it’s still growing. In fact there are over 50 Million users worldwide, and over 11 Million in Europe. Are you one? Most importanty, do you know how you can set yourself up to benefit from it?

Social Entrepreneurs Need The Anti-Hero; A Mini Guide.

A version of this article has been edited for BNet.co.uk -Social Media Entrpreneurs Need Anti-Hero Status a CBS Interactive Publication. This is the original copy. I am posting concurrently at the moment to understand peoples view on the differing styles, so leave your thoughts below!

I used to be cynical. I found it hard to believe in role models. Elevating someone to hero status in the midst of a force fed media dramatisation of real life was a sycophantic form of idolatry the hysterical masses did, not me... Was I stuck in the pre-30’s throes of make-my-own-way-or-die-trying mentality? I don’t think so.

So called ‘Heroes’ were, in my mind, full of shit. My affinity was to the Anti-Hero and I’m not going to lie, crossing of the 3-0 barrier wasn’t enlightening enough to banish my hang-ups, some loiter with intent in dark corners of my id. My belief in the importance of the Anti-Hero is getting stronger, especially from a business perspective, and I know I'm not alone.

An anti-hero is considered to be a protagonist whose character is at least in some regards contrary to that of the archetypal hero, and is in some instances his/her antithesis. The word's meaning is also considered to be sufficiently broad to additionally encompass the antagonist who (in contrast to the archetypal villain) elicits considerable sympathy or admiration. Although with its origins relating to fictional characters the use of the term has become common with relation to non-fictional characters.

In these days of transparency and widespread media proliferation, entrepreneurs and business people have to consistently differentiate themselves, have to stand out. Being a crisply dressed 'do as your Dad says' polished business demigod is just too commonplace; being remembered is paramount to success. Entrepreneurs are becoming ever more human, less cautious about the perception of their flaws, more like the anti-hero and I love it.

There is a little Randy McMurphy in all of us...
